The hitherto independent worlds of contemporary harp music and experimental kraut-pop will collide – or at least bump eachother – in this concert of two halves by harpist/songwriter Serafina Steer and her new band Bas Jan.
After a few years of mainly only using the harp for her own writings, Steer went on a roadtrip around Eastern Europe busking, discovering and rediscovering pieces along the way. The result of this experience will form the first half of the programme.
Meanwhile, Bas Jan were born. Bas Jan are Steer’s latest collaborative project with sound artist Sarah Anderson and performance visual artist Jenny Moore. Their first gig was to 6,000 people Brixton Academy and since then they have gone on to entertain smaller and smaller audiences. Minimally arranged songs by Steer about the Essex coast, the Anglo Saxons, sex, part-time work, love of course. They have supported Xylouris White (ATP) and The Decemberists (Rough Trade).
Steer’s last album The Moths Are Real came out in 2012 on Stolen Recordings. It was produced by Jarvis Cocker and was Rough Trade’s album of the month.
